The 9th ranked Towson Tigers kicked off their 2018 season with a solid 10-5 win over host UMBC (Chesapeake DII, 0-2) Friday night at Retrievers Stadium. Despite 40 degree temps and a dense fog that rolled in prior to face-off , the Tigers came out hot, netting 3 goals before I could get outta my car.
On offense the Tigers were lead by Frederick Community College transfer Zack Hansell, who netted 3 goals, while Senior Cory Curran (West Milford, NJ) added 2. But the goal of the night came courtesy of Tiger long pole Alex Kawecki, who went coast to coast before sticking the upper corner of the UMBC cage with virtually no angle.
Defensively, the Towson long poles stymied the UMBC shorties most of the night, winning the majority of their one on one match-ups.
Devin Shields and Rory Gibbons-Oniel lead all Retrievers with 2 goals and an assist each. Senior Blake Hipsley (Liberty) had a strong night in cage for the Retrievers, despite allowing 10 goals.
The win was the first of 3 on a busy weekend for Towson. The Tigers defeated Morgan State on Saturday 12-6, before defeating a stingy Loyola squad 5-4, in the rain on Sunday. Towson gets the rest of the week off before hosting West Chester (DII, 1-1) on Saturday, March 3rd.
The Retrievers face a tough upcoming weekend, as they travel to College Park to face the Maryland Terrapins (Chesapeake D1, 1-0), before hosting Salisbury (Chesapeake D1, 1-0), the following afternoon.
