2018 Conference Previews: Deep South Conference

Editors note: The following preseason previews were compiled from information submitted by each team captain/coach in response to an NCLL Preseason Questionnaire. Teams that did not respond with information could not be included in the previews.



Mississippi State University

Mascot: Bulldog

Team Officer: Will Barnes

Founded: 2008

Top Returning Players:

Senior Drew Bethea  DEF, from Collierville, Tennessee. High School.
Junior Mitch Ormesher GOL, from Round Rock High School in Round Rock, Texas.
Junior AJ Kelley at defender from New Fairfield HS in New Fairfield, Connecticut.
Senior Mason Gulick at attack from Roswell High School in Roswell, Georgia.

2017 Record and Achievements:

2-2. Some achievements to consider were most of our losses were by less than 3 goals when we had few players. This showed we were able to compete well with everybody in our division. Our 2017 Fall Ball Results were regular fall practices each Tuesday and Thursday, as well as a Fall game against Memphis where we lost 6-4.

Top Newcomers or Transfers:

We have no transfers as of right now.

Losses to Graduation:

We lost a few seniors due to graduation. One of the first seniors was Paul Balmes from Jackson, MS who started at defender. Another player we lost was Nick Hill, our starting goalkeeper.

2018 Outlook:

Our plan is to be competitive in our region. Upcoming notable contests will be our first home games on January 27th as we play Memphis after only two weeks of practice. Other notable contests include the games we plan on playing at Mercer in February against Mercer, Furman and UT-Chattanooga.


University of Alabama at Birmingham

Mascot: Blazers

Team Officer: Seth Shierling

Top Returning Players:

Tony Somers (Mid), Wade Ogburn (ATK), Seth Shierling (Mid), Vivek Singh (LSM)

2017 Record/Achievements:
Last year was the Blazers first year in the NCLL and first full season overall. They posted a 4-5 record last season. The Blazer also posted a 1-0 record in fall ball beating rival West Georgia 12-2.

Notable Transfers and Newcomers:
Carter McAplin (ATK), Will Aultman (ATK) Jeb Jebeles (Goal)

2018 Outlook:
The Blazers have improved Talent on both sides of the ball. They are looking to improve our record from last year and finish the season with a winning record. Notable upcoming contest are April 14th when the Blazers host Mercer and Mississippi State.


Tennessee at Chattanooga

Mascot: Mocs
Team Officer: Tanner DeHart
Top Returning Players:
Bronson Meskimen(D), Tucker Roberts(M), Tanner DeHart(A)
2017 Record/Achievements:
While the team has been in existence since 2007, last year was UTC’s first year being completely player/officer lead. We finished 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the Deep South Conference.
Notable Transfers and Newcomers:
Travis Gable is a goalie graduate transfer from Greensboro,NC,
Mathew Dia is a freshman Attackman from Memphis,TN.
2018 Outlook:
The Mocs have brought in some good young talent from around the southeast to complete our small numbers of a 18 man roster. We play every team in our conference twice this spring and will play a total of 11 regular season games. Mocs will be be opening up with a home game against a new strong MTSU program this Saturday February 17th.
