Main Line Classic and Podcast: Episode Three

Several of the NCLL’s top DII programs met this weekend at Cabrini University in Radnor, Pennsylvania for the Main Line Lacrosse Classic. “Main Line” refers to a section of the Pennsylvania Railroad that runs from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh via Harrisburg. Several of the teams that participated are located along this historic route.

VMI, Villanova, UMBC, PSU-Berks, Catholic, Kutztown, Monmouth and Cabrini all participated in the all-day event, with each team playing 3 games. For some teams like PSU-Berks, this was the first action of the year for their squad. The Nittany Lions even managed to squeeze in a 4th game when another team was late arriving to the campus. Berks finished the day with 1 win and 3 losses

VMI put forward a solid performance on the day, going 3-0 in early morning action. The Keydets returned to the very field in which they had dispatched Cabrini the previous night, 13-3.

The UMBC Retrievers, who carried only 13 players at game time, were still shaking off the cobwebs from celebrating their historic upset win in the NCAA Tourney on Friday, finished with a win and 2 losses. UMBC started slow but finished strong, defeating PSU-Berks 5-1 before heading back to Maryland. Villanova gave the Retrievers all it could handle in a 5-4 win but dropped their other 2 games on the day.

The afternoon games were dominated by Kutztown, as the Golden Bears picked up 3 wins, outscoring their 3 opponents, 14-4.

The craziest game of the tournament took place between the Catholic University and Monmouth, as neither team could find the net after 2 overtime periods and finally had to settle on a 4-4 tie.  The host Cavaliers finished the day with an impressive 8-3 win over Monmouth. Cabrini finished 3-1, with one win coming via forfeit.

Cabrini Midfielder, Deqwan Phillips was pleased with the Cavs efforts on the day.“We played well and have had great showings throughout the tournament but by no means are we content. We strive to get better every week but this was a good showing as a team against some amazing talent. We thank all teams who came and were a part of this tournament and look forward to a fantastic rest of the season. Best of luck to all teams competing this year with their seasons!”

Tyler Klitchko, President of Cabrini’s Club Lacrosse talked to us about the tournament and its future. “It was great seeing teams come from all over to play. All the games were competitive. In terms of the future of the tournament we are hoping to keep growing with possibly expanding the field and bring teams in from the Midwest and north.”
