Following #1 ranked Maryland’s loss on Saturday, all eyes turned to Annapolis as the #3 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions traveled to Rip Miller Field on the campus of the United States Naval Academy to take on the #2 ranked Midshipmen. The winner of this contest would undoubtedly have claims to the top seat in the land.
For much of the first half, the host Midshipmen dominated play, taking an early 8-2 lead and increasing it to 10-4 by the half.
But the Nittany Lions regrouped and stormed back in the 23rd quarter to close the gap to 12-7.
The Lions defense shut out Navy for the remainder of the game but could only muster 3 more goals in the fourth in quarter, the last coming at the 6:32 mark . In the final moments, Navy thwarted a furious Penn State assault on the cage and managed to keep the Nittany Lions from scoring during the final 6 minutes, claiming the 12-10 victory.
Navy is sure to take over the #1 ranking in D1, when the polls come out later this Tuesday.
Luckily we had Tony Bellotte on site to cover the action and take photos.
