Navy vs Virginia
In a rematch of last years Division I National Championship, the Midshipmen of the United Stated Naval Academy defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 8-4, to avenge last seasons heartbreaking 11-7 loss to the Cavaliers.
The Midshipmen entered this season ranked 3rd in the NCLL Preseason Poll, but could make a claim for the top spot this week, after knocking off the defending champs. Junior Connor Young lead all scorers for Navy with 3 goals.
The Cavaliers, who owned the NCLL Preason #1 ranking, drop to 1-2 on the season. After defeating Christopher Newport by 2 goals, the Cavs dropped a 7-6 decision to Georgetown, starting the year at 1-2.
No rest for the Midshipmen as they face a tough Towson University squad this Friday night. The Cavaliers have a long spring break then return to action on March 23rd versus Lynchburg.
Ohio vs Akron
D2 powerhouse Akron, coming off the best season in club history in which the Zips posted a staggering 15-1 mark , faced a major early season challenge when they faced off against Ohio University (D1, Ranked #8) on Saturday.
Ohio was also coming off an epic year, compiling a 7-0 record before falling to Navy in the Elite 8 on Championship weekend.
Ohio raced to a 3-1 lead after one quarter, then added 2 extra man goals to extend it’s lead to 4 at the break. Akron pilled on plenty of shots throughout the second half but couldn’t get any help from Ohio netminder Alex Meyer, he allowed only 2 Akron shots to find the net.
Ohio Club President Andrew Kaylor was proud of his squads early season grit. “I thought we played well against a very well coached Akron team. A big difference in the game was face-offs,” Kaylor said. “Logan Senhauser won the majority of the draws which gave us an advantage throughout the game. Additionally our goaltender Alex Meyer stood strong go us”, Kaylor added. “I also don’t think we were ever man down which is always extremely helpful.”
Ohio has a long wait before facing Michigan, Cincinnati and Ohio State on March 30th. The Zips hop back into on March 3rd against Slippery Rock
