Steven Institute of Technology was voted the 2020 preseason number one spot in Division II, surprising this writer and probably a few of you as well. Stevens captured the NCLL 2018 National Championship but failed to reach the playoffs in 2019 after falling to Providence, 12-9 in the regional championship game. But with Providence moving up to Division I for the 2020 season, the door is wide open for Stevens to step into the top spot.

Coming in at #2 are the Golden Rams of West Chester University. Look for the Rams to make a serious run to get back to the National Championship after dropping a 12-9 slug-fest to the Friars in last years DII final. West Chester doesn’t rebuild, they reload, and the Rams will look to once again reign supreme in the DII Liberty Conference.

And you can’t mention the Liberty Conference without giving props to this preseasons #6 ranked team from Rowan. The Prof’s looked very strong this past Fall at the Fallbrawl Tournament and might finally have all the pieces in place to take down the Rams this season.

A few big questions for Division II 2020; Can Kentucky hold back Louisville and make it to the Elite 8? Can anyone challenge VMI in the Blue Ridge Conference? Who will escape the heavily talented Chesapeake Conference; UMBC? Catholic? Or will Georgetown or Stevenson make a push? Can RIT dethrone Ithaca and make it back to the DII Tournament ?

With Providence moving onto Division I, the DII crown is up for grabs in 2020!! Look for our initial Podcast later this week, where we will review both preseasons polls, talk some fall ball, introduce some new teams and touch on a few interesting off season stories.

  1. How is west Chester #2?…. Both them and Stevens lost to providence with the same exact score. West Chester plays multiple D1 teams every season and competes with them at a high level. Stevens didn’t make the tournament… needs to be some explanation here

    1. There are several factors that come into play when we release the Preseason Rankings, some of them include:
      1. Returning roster for 2020
      2. New incoming players for 2020
      3. Previous 2019 season vs Top 20 teams and results in Conference Championships and National Tournament
      4. Expected Results from year to year after fine tuning a 10 year process

It all shakes out in the end and more often than not, the rankings have been very accurate as the only difference between #1 & #2 will be who takes the Frederick Cup home: in either case, both teams have a legitimate shot. No ranking is fool proof in any sport but it does make for a colorful debate.
