West Chester, Maryland Claim Beltway Bash Championships

This year’s Beltway Bash came to an exciting conclusion this past Sunday in College Park, MD as several nationally ranked rivals squared off in the DI and DII finals.

After nearly being upset by UMBC on Saturday night, the top-ranked Golden Rams (Liberty DII, 11-4) from West Chester composed themselves and topped the Retrievers 12-3 early Sunday to make it to the DII Championship game. Their opponent, the Keydets from VMI, had themselves survived a tough challenge from Catholic U, 5-4 in their semifinal match.

The DII finals was a slug fest to say the least, with plenty of laundry being tossed all over the field. After the wounded were carted off the field and the critically injured were sent to local hospitals, the Rams prevailed 6-5.

The Division I game was equally intense but far less bloody, as JMU faced the host Terps in a rematch of a one sided round-robin match that went to the Dukes, 6-3. The championship game was the third meeting of the year between the schools, with the teams splitting their previous match-ups with 1 win a piece.

The Terps came out slow but eventually turned up the offense in the second half and fought off a late offense surge from the Dukes to pull off the 5-4 win, handing the Terps another beltway bash DI Title.
